Fighting period poverty

Updated: Aug 12, 2023

As a champion and changemaker in the promotion of equal opportunities in our communities, The Bough Foundation is creating awareness of #periodpoverty in Kenya.

Through our grassroots-facing mentorship program, we help educate girls on menstrual hygiene so that they experience safe periods with dignity and without stigma.

We work with existing community assets and structures which leverage the community power dynamics to build sustainable structures that can perpetually support efforts to eliminate #periodproperty through a multi-step process.

Period Poverty is the lack of access to sanitary products, menstrual hygiene, education for girls & more. Period Poverty makes it harder for women & girls to manage their menses safely and with dignity. The cultural connotations associated with menstruation and lack of access to resources stop women and girls from going to school, church, or simply going about their daily business.

As a result of Period Poverty:

  • Many women and girls are forced to use unhygienic substitutes for menstrual products.

  • Social stigma makes it difficult for girls and women living in conflict zones, arid and underresourced areas, and vulnerable communities to manage their periods.

Every woman and girl has the right to go through her monthly cycle safely and with dignity. So, let’s work together to end the cultural stigma around menses, and ultimately eliminate #periodproperty.

The Bough Foundation in partnership with UNESCO Youth ran a pad drive and tree-planting community outreach in Kajiado County. The greatest impact was seen in the effects of mentorship provided to over 100 girls in the campaign.
